Reduction in CO\u2082 emissions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Freight transport, warehouse management and distribution account for a significant proportion of <strong>greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions<\/strong>. The transport sector in Europe is responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/topics\/in-depth\/transport-and-mobility?activeTab=fa515f0c-9ab0-493c-b4cd-58a32dfaae0a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>25% of CO\u2082 emissions<\/u><\/strong><\/a>, with around 77% of EU emissions coming from road freight transport in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is ambitious: to reduce <strong>GHG emissions by 55%<\/strong> by 2030, compared with 1990 levels, so that Europe becomes the <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.ec.europa.eu\/eu-action\/climate-strategies-targets\/2030-climate-targets_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>first climate-neutral continent<\/u><\/strong><\/a>. This target has been strengthened from the previous target of a 40% reduction to align with the wider objective of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. In France, for example, transport companies have already been forced since 2015 to declare to their customers the quantities of greenhouse gases emitted for the delivery they carry out, in accordance with the Code des transports. But from now on, all companies with more than 500 employees must also declare these indirect emissions in their carbon accounting (<a href=\"https:\/\/antsroute.com\/en\/solutions\/decarbonising-scope-3-origins-measures-and-concrete-examples-applied-to-transport\/\"><u>see our article on decarbonising scope 3<\/u><\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"2_Air_pollution_and_noise_pollution\">2. Air pollution and noise pollution<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In addition to CO\u2082 emissions, transport is responsible for <strong>40% of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions<\/strong>, 11-15% of <strong>fine particles<\/strong> (PM 2.5) and 10-15% of volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs). In urban areas, logistics alone generates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etp-logistics.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Urban-Freight-Roadmap.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>30-50% of atmospheric pollutants<\/u><\/a>. These emissions contribute to <strong>air pollution<\/strong>, which causes more than <strong>400,000 deaths<\/strong> in Europe every year, according to the European Environment Agency (EEA). <strong>Noise pollution<\/strong>, from heavy goods vehicles and logistics infrastructures, also creates a major nuisance, especially in urban areas. These two issues have a major impact on people&#8217;s quality of life, and call for concrete measures to reduce them. This will involve extending <a href=\"https:\/\/antsroute.com\/en\/solutions\/new-urban-logistics-strategy-in-london-and-ulez-expansion-how-can-you-prepare\/\"><u>Low Emission Zones (LEZs)<\/u><\/a> in major conurbations and moving towards vehicles that comply with the <strong>Euro 6<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.ec.europa.eu\/eu-action\/transport\/road-transport-reducing-co2-emissions-vehicles\/reducing-co2-emissions-heavy-duty-vehicles_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Regulation on CO\u2082 emission standards for HDVs<\/u><\/a>, and with <strong>Euro 7<\/strong> scheduled for 2027.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"3_Energy_consumption_of_warehouses\">3. Energy consumption of warehouses<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Logistics is an extremely energy-intensive sector. And it&#8217;s not just transport vehicles that are to blame.<\/p>\n<p>There are more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savills.com\/research_articles\/255800\/358461-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>1,500 warehouses\/logistics hubs<\/u><\/a> in the UK, covering almost 430 million sq.ft. The operation of warehouses requires continuous energy consumption for tasks such as heating, cooling goods, lighting and powering automation systems. Refrigerated warehouses, for example, consume <strong>3 to 5 times more energy<\/strong> than a normal warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>To meet this challenge in France, the \u00c9co \u00c9nergie Tertiaire (EET) decree requires a <strong>40% reduction in the final energy consumption<\/strong> of warehouses by 2030, compared with a baseline year between 2010 and 2019.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Impact_on_ecosystems\">4. Impact on ecosystems<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The building of logistics infrastructures contributes to the <strong>artificialisation of soils<\/strong>, which threatens biodiversity by fragmenting the natural habitats of flora and fauna. Logistics warehouses account for more than <strong>1%<\/strong> of these artificialised areas in Europe. In the UK, <strong>6,000 hectares<\/strong> of natural and agricultural land are lost every year. In France, the figure reaches 22,000 hectares.<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/669a25e9a3c2a28abb50d2b4\/NPPF_December_2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>National Planning Policy Framework<\/u><\/a> (NPPF)<\/strong> emphasises sustainable development and encourages the use of industrial wastelands (previously developed lands) before greenfield lands, in order to limit the expansion of urbanisation into natural and agricultural areas.<\/p>\n<p>In Europe, the <strong>Climate and Resilience law<\/strong> requires the consumption of natural and agricultural areas to be reduced by 50% by 2031 (compared with 2021), with the ultimate aim of achieving <strong>Zero Net Artificialisation (ZNA)<\/strong> by 2050.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"5_Optimisation_of_resources_traceability_and_re-use\">5. Optimisation of resources: traceability and re-use<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The waste of resources is also a major challenge for the supply chain as a whole. In the food industry alone, 88 million tonnes of food are thrown away every year in Europe, including 9.5 million tonnes in the UK alone. Some of these wastes are due to excessive production, insufficient traceability or failure to respect use-by dates. And the same applies to other sectors. Not to mention the large amount of single-use packaging and the harmful materials it contains.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/resources-and-waste-strategy-for-england\/resources-and-waste-strategy-at-a-glance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>UK Resources and Waste Strategy<\/u><\/a> for a circular economy, enacted in 2018, seeks to move away from plastic and disposable packaging and promote repair and re-use.
